MCF–Moose Lake Release Paths
MCF–Moose Lake is a Minnesota Department of Corrections state prison. It is a Level 3 medium-security facility for adult men. Geography does not make its prisoners Carlton County jail inmates. A person held there belongs to the statewide MNDOC correctional system, and the county sheriff roster does not track a prison release.
Routine fixed Minnesota prison sentences commonly move from imprisonment to statutory supervised release. The person lives in the community under conditions while still within MNDOC jurisdiction. Some limited life, indeterminate, or qualifying juvenile matters require action by the Minnesota Supervised Release Board. Other departures are transfers between prisons, sentence expiration and final discharge, civil commitment, or movement under another legal hold.

Confirm an MCF–Moose Lake Release
Begin with the MNDOC Locator when the person is believed to remain under state jurisdiction. Its stated coverage includes committed adults in prison and those released from prison but still under supervision. Search by first and last name or enter the complete six-digit MNDOC Offender ID. Name search is prefix-oriented and includes conviction names, name history, and aliases.
- Search the official MNDOC Locator using a full surname and an accurate first-name prefix, or use the six-digit offender number.
- Open the matching public detail and record only the fields and status labels actually displayed.
- Distinguish a prison transfer, community supervision, projected date, and final discharge.
- Contact the supervision office shown when the person remains under jurisdiction in the community.
- Request the historical offender and sentence records when the person is absent after a possible full discharge.
Newly sentenced people may take several business days to appear. A negative search also does not prove no state case existed. The person may be fully discharged, the name may differ, or the case may never have involved an executed prison commitment. The broader Carlton County release search separates these state records from county, court, federal, and civil paths.
MCF–Moose Lake Locator Records
The research did not verify a universal public result label of “Discharged,” and it did not verify that every Locator detail displays a “Projected Release Date.” Do not infer either field. MNDOC’s Certified Case Summary form proves that the internal sentence record separately maintains jail credit, parole or supervised-release eligibility date, projected release date, full-term or expiration date, and time served.

For older or fully discharged records, ask MNDOC Records Management for the certified case summary, actual release date and type, supervision start and end, final-discharge status, facility movement, and public photograph. Section 241.06 requires MNDOC to keep a discharge record that includes whether discharge was final and the person’s condition on leaving. Public access still requires Chapter 13 classification review and may involve redaction.

The captured form confirms that the state lookup is based on name or the complete correctional ID, not a Carlton jail booking number.
MCF–Moose Lake Projected Release
For fixed executed felony sentences for crimes committed on or after August 1, 1993, Minn. Stat. §244.101 generally divides the term into two-thirds imprisonment and one-third supervised release. Minnesota is not an approximate 85 percent system. Discipline, jail credit, sentence structure, program eligibility, earned credit, and outside holds can change the projected prison exit.
The Minnesota Rehabilitation and Reinvestment Act can add earned incentive release credit for qualifying people who complete plan objectives. The maximum credit is 17 percent of the total executed sentence, and it cannot reduce imprisonment below one-half of that sentence. Eligibility is not automatic, an award must be verified, and credit may be revoked for a facility-rule violation or criminal act.
A projected date is not an appointment and not a final discharge date. The person remains subject to release planning, conditions, lawful holds, and final processing. MNDOC form 203.115C is the right sentence record when the public Locator does not display enough detail.
Note: Supervised release starts the community portion of a sentence; full-term expiration marks a different legal point and may occur later.
MCF–Moose Lake Release Supervision
A person released from Moose Lake to supervision remains within MNDOC jurisdiction. The supervising office shown in the state record handles reporting and conditions. If Carlton County is the destination, Arrowhead Regional Corrections and the county’s Court & Field Services route may be involved. The local office cannot replace the state prison release record, but it can help verify assignment within public-data limits.
Minnesota VINE does not receive MNDOC prison data. It covers county jails and detention facilities. Minnesota Haven is the separate prison notification program. Haven can provide notice of events such as release, agent assignment, conditional release, final release, and expiration of sentence. An active DOC fugitive result has a narrow meaning. It indicates alleged violation and evasion while the person serves the community portion. It is not proof of final discharge, and it does not erase the earlier prison release. A hearing record may be needed to distinguish a warrant, detention, modified condition, revocation, or return to prison.
MCF–Moose Lake Records Contact
The prison can answer facility-specific questions. MNDOC Records Management is the proper office for a historical release, sentence computation, final discharge, or public offender record. Inspection is free when a copy is unnecessary. The February 2026 state form lists copies at $0.25 per page or actual retrieval, copying, and delivery costs, with data supplied after payment.

MNDOC applies a reasonable-time standard and classification review, not a promised response day. Corrections records may include private medical, psychological, financial, unrelated personal, or security-sensitive data. Ask for the public parts and allow redaction rather than demanding an unredacted file.
ICE Holds After MCF–Moose Lake Release
An immigration hold can affect what happens after a state prison release, but it must be tied to the person’s actual record. ICE describes a detainer as a request for notice and up to 48 additional hours so federal immigration custody may begin. A prison exit followed by transfer to ICE is not a community return.
Use the release or movement record to identify the receiving agency. ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. A missing result can reflect identity, age, country, timing, or data issues.
No official source reviewed shows that MCF–Moose Lake or Carlton County has a standing ICE detention contract. General detainer law does not establish one. Use the ICE path only when a person-specific hold, transfer, or immigration case appears in the records.
Justice Center History Stays Separate
The new Carlton County Justice Center was commemorated in 2025 and consolidates the county jail, sheriff, court, probation, prosecution, and defense offices. Sheriff Kelly Lake is the named responsible authority for the county Sheriff Records route. Those county facts do not describe MCF–Moose Lake, its prison beds, its release unit, or its address.
MCF–Moose Lake has its own history. MNDOC’s official facility account traces the prison’s conversion from a former regional treatment center beginning in 1988. The site is a state prison in Moose Lake and can house roughly 1,000 men. Its Transitions and Planning for Release program is also a prison function, separate from county jail discharge processing.
Keep the records divided as well. MNDOC documents prison custody and discharge. A Carlton court file may explain a conviction, but it does not replace the state sentence computation or the actual Moose Lake release record.
